Facts on Women in Poverty

Seventy percent of people living in poverty worldwide are women. Women living in poverty are at risk for other problems, including poor general health and reproductive health, lack of access to education and increased risk of sexual, physical and emotional abuse.

  1. Significance

    • On average, women are paid 30 to 40 percent less than men doing comparable work. This means that women in poverty are further disadvantaged, having to rely on government programs for help, including health care and reproductive health services.

    Features

    • Women of color make up a disproportionate amount of women in poverty, which presents further challenges.

    Effects

    • Challenges for women in poverty often include reproductive and health issues. Worldwide, half a million women die from pregnancy-related complications every year because reproductive health care is unavailable or unaffordable. Anemia due to iron deficiency and malnutrition due to poverty are also health risks for impoverished women.
