How a Firearm Silencer Works

A suppressor or silencer muffles the sound of a firearm, but does not completely silence it, according to the Western Criminology Review. The silencer prevents hot gases from escaping after the bullet is fired, thus suppressing the sound.

  1. Gases Cool

    • The gases are temporarily trapped inside the expansion chamber of the silencer, according to the Softpedia website. There the gases cool and exit into the air at lower pressure and slower speed, making less sound.

    Effectiveness

    • Silencers are effective only for guns that fire subsonic ammunition, or bullets that travel more slowly than the speed of sound. Faster bullets are more powerful and produce too much sound to be suppressed.

    Legal Use

    • Silencers may be used legitimately by police, private security and groundskeepers to shoot dangerous animals or pests in or around buildings. Competitive shooters may also use silenced firearms.
