Problems With Skype Crashing on an iPhone

Using Skype in combination with your iPhone and a 3G network is a cheap alternative to long-distance calls. The Skype application can be downloaded from iTunes for free, and installation is easy through iTunes.

  1. Jailbroken iPhones

    • Most users who report issues with Skype crashing on their iPhones are using "jailbroken" phones. These are iPhones that have had different software installed (a process that is legal and can be undone at any time by restoring the iPhone through iTunes).

    Jailbroken Phone Crashes

    • If Skype is crashing on your iPhone after you've jailbroken it, it's likely the Skype application is conflicting with an app called Mobile Substrate. To bypass this conflict, install an application called Cydia and then open the SpringBoard Settings by dragging your finger across the status bar at the top of the iPhone. Hit the SBS power button and then click "Safe Mode." Skype will now run without conflict.

    Reinstalling Applications on iPhones

    • If your Skype application continues to crash, or if you haven't changed the software on your iPhone and continue to use the stock Springboard, try reinstalling the Skype app. To remove an app, hold your finger on its icon on the main iPhone screen until the icons begin to shake. Tap the "x" in the corner of the icon to remove the app. Reinstall Skype through the App Store and try again.
