What is Junior ROTC?

As of 2010, the Junior Reserve Officer's Training Corps (ROTC) consists of over 280,000 members and 4,000 instructors, according to the U.S. Army Junior ROTC website. This program helps young men and women become better citizens.

  1. Misconceptions

    • The JROTC has changed from its original mission to find recruits and offer military training. Instead, the JROTC focuses on instilling traditional morals, leadership skills and survival techniques.

    History

    • Congress created the JROTC program with the National Defense Act of 1916, according to the JROTC website. Until 1964, only the Army had a JROTC branch, and it used active duty personnel to teach cadets. After 1964, all units of the military have an ROTC branch, and retired Army personnel teach courses.

    Considerations

    • Joining the JROTC does not entail any military commitments after high school, and you may have added scholarship opportunities, such as the Civilian Marksmanship Program scholarship.
