Training for Beekeeping

Training for Beekeeping thumbnail
A proper beekeeping suit is required.

Beekeeping training is important, whether knowledge is gained through books, mentoring or training courses. If you are not familiar with the care and colony habits of beekeeping, it could result it multiple bee stings or even bee colony death.

  1. Hands-on Training

    • In exchange for honey, large honey businesses often offer beekeeping courses aimed at specific skill levels to ensure proper care, safety and successful honey hive production. Offering free labor to an experienced, local beekeeper is also another great way to get hands-on, invaluable knowledge. Both training methods offer a practical guide, which often ensues ongoing mentoring support.

    Other Training Methods

    • Agricultural colleges and universities offer credit and non-credit courses in beekeeping, ranging from one day to one week. Credit courses usually are put toward a bachelor's of agriculture degree. Books are another readily available source of information.

    Basic Training Knowledge

    • Beekeeping requires knowledge of safety protocol, hive health, bylaw information, disease control, feeding and seasonal care. Courses will also cover the importance of hive location, how to mark queen bees, external threats to the colony and the basic materials required for beekeeping, such as smokers, veils, suits and hives.
