California is among the states that ban the disposal of microwave ovens in the trash and from entering landfills within the state.

Considerations

Federal universal wastes regulations, as set forth in 40 CFR part 273, can be modified by states, which have the authority to add to the federal code. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends checking with the state government for the exact regulations regarding the disposal of universal wastes.
