Why Are People Hanging Tea Bags in Their Windows?
In 2009, Timeout New York ran an article entitled "Turn Tea Bags Into Curtains," which encouraged its readers to "put herbal bags to use, creating a scented window screen." Does this Spark an idea?
-
How To
-
The Timeout New York article included instructions for making a window screen out of tea bags, sewing or gluing together tea bags in rows to fit your window. The 25-year-old Brooklyn artist highlighted in the article, Este Lewis, suggests being experimental when creating the screen. "Don't worry about making the seams perfect. Imperfections just make it look more endearing."
Benefits
-
This project requires little more than teabags and glue or thread, making it a hands-on, low-cost project; since the tea will not be drunk, you need not even purchase a high-quality tea product. In addition, hanging tea bags from your windows--either by creating a screen, or by hanging them individually--can have an aromatherapy benefit.

Variety
-
Use fragrances like lavender to soothe, or peppermint to invigorate. You also can use different types of flat, string-free tea bags or tent-shaped bags. For a more labor-intensive project, create a varied look by emptying some of the tea bags to create a pattern in the shade. If hanging tea bags individually by the window, hang them at different heights to create interest.
