Why Is My Grand Am Overheating?

The radiator is only one item that can cause overheating.

Virtually nothing can destroy an automobile engine faster than overheating. When a Grand Am or any other vehicle overheats, there are several things to check. Some things can be quickly checked by the owner, but others may require professional service.

Quick Visual Check

Low coolant level will cause overheating. When the engine is cool, check the fluid level in the radiator and expansion tank. If the fluid is low, fill to the recommended level, indicated on the expansion tank.

Belt and Hose Issues

Loose or worn serpentine belts or leaking radiator hoses can also cause overheating. If a hose is leaking or bulging, replace the hose. Check the condition and tension of the serpentine belt, which operates the fan and other devices. If the belt is loose, adjust the tension or replace the belt.

Problems That Cannot be Seen

Grand Ams may overheat if the thermostat is sticking, the head gasket is leaking, the water pump is defective or the radiator is plugged. These items are not always easy to accurately diagnose and professional assistance may be required. The thermostat is not difficult to change and replacing it at home is not expensive. Beyond that, professional assistance is recommended.
