Endophytic Fungus From Mangroves

Mangroves are hosts to over 200 species of endophytic fungi, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine. Endophytic fungi are parasites. More than one type of endophytic fungus can colonize a mangrove.

  1. Types of Fungi

    • Endophytic fungi on mangroves include Aspergillus, Fusarium, Penicillium and Trichoderma. Many fungi can colonize more than one species of host, but some can live only on mangroves, which grow in many subtropical and tropical saltwater coastal regions in the world, including the U.S.

    Fungal Products

    • These fungi have been found to produce various substances which have antimicrobial and anti-tumor properties. They may also make compounds that may have potential applications in agriculture, as well as industrial and environmental fields, according to AcademicJournals.org.

    Other Facts

    • Each mangrove tree has its own characteristic colony of endophytic fungi. The composition of the colonies and their dominance are influenced by factors including the age of the tree, the seasons, and the part of the tree.
