Automotive Locksmith Training

An automotive locksmith works on car door locks that have been locked accidentally, are malfunctioning or need replacement. Automotive locksmiths are generally thought of as people who come to the rescue when keys have been locked in a car, but they also perform other tasks, such as duplicating lost keys or extracting broken keys from a lock.

  1. Basics

    • Training for automotive locksmiths varies in scope. However, almost all training consists of aspects such as cutting keys, understanding how locks work and troubleshooting door problems.

    Duration

    • Automotive locksmith training programs differ in length, although they are generally fairly short. Some take two months to complete, while others take just a couple of days.

    Cost

    • Most automotive locksmith training programs involve the purchase of textbooks, manuals or other learning materials, as well as a general fee to enter the course. Most also involve the purchase of tools needed for the job. In October 2010, the cost of a two-month program was $925.
