Connecticut Laws on Beekeeping
Connecticut residents may keep and maintain honeybee hives throughout the state, so long as registration and inspection laws are followed. Knowing the laws helps prevent fines and aids in the prevention of disease and parasites.
-
Time Frame
-
All honeybee hives must be registered with the state before October first of each year, according to the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station. Registration is free and includes information about the hive location and beekeeper contact information. The state entomologist maintains the registration and sends a copy to the local clerk of court as well.
Considerations
-
The state entomologist has the right to appoint inspectors and inspect any hive as deemed necessary and must have access to all hives and equipment upon request. Bee colonies must not be transported or accepted in the state until a certificate of good health is obtained. In addition, the entomologist has the right to quarantine, treat or destroy hives and equipment that are found to be carrying the foul brood disease.

Warning
-
Beekeepers in Connecticut who fail to register their hives may be charged a fee, up to $5 as of October 2010, while those who do not adhere to the state's inspection laws may be fined up to $50.
