Toxic Fumes From Perfume

Although perfume smells lovely, many brands contain toxic chemicals.

Many people have a reaction similar to an allergic reaction when smelling perfume. This may seem odd, but in actuality, a number of perfumes contain toxic chemicals. Many contain the same chemicals found in cigarettes.

Significance

Perfumes, and other products containing scent, such as lotions and shampoos, can be hazardous to the health of those using the products and those smelling them. Many perfumed products contain chemicals that cause allergic reactions and some can provoke more serious consequences. People with MCS, or multiple chemical sensitivity, suffer severe reactions to even small amounts of a chemical.

Types

Acetone is found in nail polish remover, cologne and detergents. It is a central nervous system depressant. Benzyl acetate, found in hairspray, bleach and deodorants, is an irritant to lungs and the gastrointestinal tract that may cause kidney damage. Methylene chloride, found in shampoo, cologne and paint remover, was banned by the FDA in 1988, but is still found in fragrances due to lack of disclosure laws.

Prevention/Solution

One of the simplest ways to avoid problems from fragrance in beauty products is to avoid using scented products. "Natural" and "fragrance-free" lotions and shampoos avoid any toxic chemicals in their production. Not all natural or fragrance-free products are free of toxins, so research and read labels carefully.
