Biodiesel Fuel Gelling Up Fuel Lines

Biodiesel fuel can clog fuel lines.

Biodiesel gelling occurs when temperatures drop low enough that the fuel turns solid, according to the National Biodiesel Board. Most people won't have gelling problems because this only occurs in biodiesel with a high concentration of oil.

There are several ways to make biodiesel; which one you use, such as canola oil or animal, determines the gelling temperature, according to the National Biodiesel Board. Animal fat gels at around 50 degrees Fahrenheit, while yellow grease congeals at close to 32 degrees Fahrenheit.

Effects

Eventually, gelled biodiesel will clog fuel lines, according to The Independent. Clogged fuel lines will lead to stalling problems and possibly engine failure.

Tip

As long as you do not run a biodiesel max that contains more than 80 percent alcohol, you should not have congealing problems, according to BioFuelOasis. Also, fuel additives can lower the gelling temperature.
