Where Is the Thermostat on an Evinrude?

Evinrude is a manufacturer of marine outboard engines. Like any engines, Evinrude motors require cooling. The engine uses the surrounding water, also known as "raw-water," as its coolant. A thermostat regulates the Evinrude's cooling system.

What is a Thermostat?

A thermostat regulates the engine's temperature. It measures the temperature of a given space or body, then activates the heating or cooling source to maintain a temperature set point.

Outboard Thermostat

The thermostat on an outboard engine regulates the raw water used for cooling an engine. The thermostat senses the engine's temperature and reacts by controlling the flow of the raw water. As the engine heats up, the thermostat opens to allow more cooling. If the engine is at a stable temperature, the thermostat closes to limit the cooling. Most Evinrude outboards will also be equipped with a bypass valve that will keep the coolant pressure regulated by discharging excess raw water.

Location

The thermostat is located in the thermostat housing which, depending on model, will be located on the upper left corner of the engine when looking astern.

Price

As of 2010 an Evinrude outboard thermostat costs about $20. The larger cost is that of labor to install it. If you are doing the job yourself it is prudent to buy the thermostat kit, which is about $40. This will provide you with any materials that might have worn out, such as gaskets.
