MREs contain the components of a well-balanced meal meant to meet high-calorie demands. Both military and most civilian MREs contain an entree, side dish, some type of bread and spread, dessert and a packet containing condiments, utensils and a powdered beverage. All components are individually packaged. The military MREs contain a heating unit.
MRE Shelf Life

An MRE shelf life varies depending on the type of storage and temperature. At 120 degrees Fahrenheit an MRE will last at least one month. At 60 degrees an MRE will last at least 48 months. If stored in a climate controlled facility, shelf life is extended significantly. At 60 degrees an MRE can last for 84 months. Frozen storage is not recommended.

Determining the Quality of an MRE

SInce 1997 military MREs have been packaged with a time and temperature indicator on the case. This temperature sensitive device indicates when an MRE is past its prime.
Because it is illegal to commercially sell military MREs, it is often difficult to ensure the quality of what you buy from individuals or auction sites. Civilian MREs from reputable manufacturers and distributers ensure greater quality control and provide customer service.
