Pain From a Ureteral Stent Removal

Pain From a Ureteral Stent Removal thumbnail
Pain after surgery can be intense, but not ureteral stent removal.

You won't get anesthesia for your stent removal from your ureter unless there are complications. The stent is typically removed in your urologist's office or in outpatient surgery, in most cases under a local dose of lidocaine.

  1. The Immediate Pain

    • After time wearing a swizzle stick size stent in your spaghetti size ureter, expect at least minimal discomfort when its removed. The cytoscopy procedure places a small tube in the urethra after it is coated with lidocaine, a topical anesthetic. The urologist will ask you to take a deep breath while he pulls the stent out.

    Post Cytoscopic Pain

    • Some patients report discomfort after experiencing a cytoscopic procedure. This must be assessed by your urologist to determine if any infection or inflammation is present.

    Fallen Stents

    • Stents that aren't removed rarely may fall out with the passing of urine. The passing may cause pain. The stent should be saved and taken to your urologist immediately.
