Why Did I Get a Blue Screen While Working on an Excel 2007 Spreadsheet?
The "Blue Screen of Death" is an iconic Windows error, nearly synonymous with irrecoverable operating system failure. While not so common in current installations, it's still possible for a system malfunction to result in the dreaded blue screen error.
-
Understanding the Blue Screen Error
-
The blue screen error indicates a Windows stop message; it means that an error has occurred and Windows cannot work past it. The blue screen is accompanied by a series of error codes, indicating to the user where the issue can be found. Sometimes the problem is a one-time occurrence, and other times it indicates a serious issue within the operating system and will recur.
Potential Causes for Excel Error
-
According to Microsoft, there have been instances of stop errors when trying to open a spreadsheet file created in an older version of Excel. Additionally, this issue may be caused by having the "Ignore other applications" setting applied in Excel. You can clear this setting by going to "File" > "Options" > "Advanced" and deselecting the option.

Troubleshooting Excel Errors
-
If your blue screen error persists, try running Windows in Safe Mode and seeing if the file opens without error. You may also try running Microsoft Fix It to see if that can locate and repair the issue (see Resources). For more troubleshooting options for Excel, consider the Microsoft support page for Excel startup problems (see Resources).
