Honeybees make royal jelly from digested pollen.

Royal jelly is a combination of pollen, honey and enzymes that is produced by honeybees. It is essential to the diet of the larvae that will later become queen bees.

  1. Purpose of Royal Jelly

    • Royal jelly is fed to all honeybee larvae for the first three days of their lives. After those three days, their diet is changed, except for the larvae that will one day become queen bees; they are fed royal jelly for the entire time that they are larvae.

    Ingredients

    • Royal jelly is made of pollen, honey and enzymes. It contains high concentrations of proteins, lipids, sugars, hormones and vitamins.

    How Royal Jelly Is Made

    • Royal jelly is made by nurse bees, which are worker honeybees between the ages of 5 and 15 days. The nurse bees ingest pollen and honey, and secrete royal jelly from the hypopharangeal glands on either side of their heads. The enzymes and hormones found in royal jelly come from these glands.
