What to Include in Care Packages to Servicemen

Our servicemen and servicewomen keep us safe both domestically and overseas. Our troops overseas are often separated from their loved ones. One way of letting our troops know they're appreciated is by sending a care package.

  1. What to Include

    • According to Charity Guide, nonperishable food items and entertainment items are welcomed. Toiletries (for both men and women), sunscreen and sunglasses and international phone cards are also useful. Of course, a letter thanking the recipient for his service is a welcome morale boost.

    What Not to Include

    • Homemade baked goods may spoil or go to someone with an allergy to an ingredient. Items considered pornographic or that depict nudity are restricted. Bulk religious materials and pork products are also restricted.

    How to Package

    • The United States Postal Service recommends sturdy packaging for difficult desert conditions. Make sure all items are cushioned and the box is well sealed. Mail to servicemen and women must be addressed to a specific person due to safety concerns.

    Other Options

    • If you're uncertain of what to include or don't personally know a soldier, there are several organizations that will send a care package on your behalf. United Service Organizations (USO) will send a care package on your behalf for a donation.
