What Are the Pros & Cons of Using Fleece Material? thumbnail
Fleece is soft against tender skin

Fleece, also called polar fleece, is a synthetic material that was invented by Malden Mills in 1979 as an alternative to traditional wool. It is produced from polyethylene terephthalate, which can be made from recycled plastic bottles.

  1. Weight

    • Fleece is a light-weight material and is warm for its weight. It also comes in a wide range of densities, colors and prices.

    Synthetic

    • As a synthetic material, fleece will disperse perspiration and moisture more quickly than cotton. Fleece is not wind-proof and cold breezes will easily penetrate. Fleece is suitable for those who are allergic to wool, or who prefer to avoid animal products.

    Care

    • Polar fleece is easily washable in cold water, but may be damaged by hot water. As a synthetic, it is more susceptible to detergent buildup, which can be an issue for people with allergies. Also, fleece may look worn after only a short time.
