Is There a Lawn Fertilizer Using Beer and Lemon Joy?
Lawn fertilizer or lawn tonic is natural form of fertilizer made from household ingredients. A general lawn tonic is made from beer, soda, ammonia, mouthwash, dish soap, molasses and/or corn syrup. All these ingredients work together to promote plant growth, root development, and reduce plant stress. Does this Spark an idea?
-
Carbohydrate Source
-
Beer is a source of carbohydrates for plants. Beer and soda are good sources of carbohydrates for this homemade lawn fertilizer. Also molasses and/or corn syrup provide carbohydrates and in the case of molasses provides iron. Carbohydrates feed microbes in the soil which in turn converts food in the soil into a source that plants can use. Iron helps plants become greener.
Insecticide and/or Fungicide
-
Mouthwash works as both an insecticide and fungicide. Mouthwash added to this homemade fertilizer acts as an insecticide and fungicide.
-
Wetting Agent
-
Dish soap not detergent needs to be used as the wetting agent. Dish soap, like Lemon Joy, not detergent works as a wetting agent for the soil so fertilizer can percolate down through it and as a leaf coating. This coating holds nutrients on the leaf surface so it can be absorbed.
Nitrogen Source
-
Ammonia while used for cleaning also is used as a source of nitrogen in lawn fertilizer. Ammonia provides a form of nitrogen that is easily taken up by plants.
