Schematics: the symbolic language of electronics

A schematic is a symbolic representation of an electronic circuit. Learning schematics is just like learning any other symbolic language. You have to know what each symbol means and you have to know the rules for properly utilizing each symbol.

  1. Electronics Familiarity

    • An electronics background is not necessary for learning schematics, but it is recommended. Becoming familiar with the basic electronic concepts of power sources, connections, resistance, capacitance and inductance will aid in the learning process.

    Schematic Symbol Reference

    • A valid, authoritative source for the symbol definitions is crucial. Make sure that the symbol source is representative of universal electronic standards, such as ANSI (American National Standards Institute) or IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission).

    DC Before AC

    • Some people believe that DC circuits are much easier to learn than AC circuits. In AC, voltage and current are constantly in motion, and the math for the concepts can be difficult.

    Start With a Simple Schematic

    • Don't overwhelm yourself with the complex schematic of your stereo. Instead, use a schematic of a basic DC circuit -- something with just a battery, a resistor and an LED. This will help clarify the symbol basics and it will be easier to understand, electrically.

    Comprehend What You See

    • Try to learn how the circuit works as you learn how to read the schematic. Have a scholarly electronics reference source handy, such as "Fundamentals of DC and AC Circuits" (see Resources). Break a circuit down to the component level and gradually piece it back together. With patience, time and consistent practice you'll be able to learn the language of schematics.
