Beekeeping Information

Beekeepers maintain and tend to honeycombs. Beekeeping can be a hobby or become a professional career. When working with bee colonies it is critical to practice caution to avoid getting stung.

  1. Function

    • Beekeepers, known as apiarists, are people who keep bees to collect honey and beeswax or to pollinate crops and plants. Some beekeepers are also in the business of farming bees and selling honeybee colonies to other beekeepers.

    Beekeeping Suits

    • Beekeepers must wear safety suits when working with bees to prevent themselves from being stung. According to United Safety Authority, beekeeping suits offer head-to-toe protection, and come equipped with veils or hoods to cover the face, as well as gloves to protect the hands. Beekeeping suits are light-colored and should fit properly to ensure effective protection.

    Purchasing Bees

    • Beekeepers can purchase colonies of bees from other apiarists or apiary farms, or from stores that sell honeybees. Bees come in packages, and it is up to the beekeeper to release the bees into a controlled environment once the package is open. Bees must be released into their hive, as opposed to out in the open.

    Geography

    • Beekeeping is possible almost anywhere in the world, but it is important to check with city or state laws to see if any laws or codes exist for keeping bees privately.
