What Is the Age Limit on Employment in Florida?

Newspaper deliverypersons can be as young as 10 years of age in the state of Florida.

The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) regulates child labor standards, including wage, age, hours and record-keeping standards. In accordance with the FLSA, the state of Florida has set forth laws and regulations limiting the age requirement for employment.

Minimum Age

Children ages 14, 15, 16 and 17 may work in the state of Florida, but they are not allowed to work during school hours. Children under the age of 14 are prohibited from working in the state of Florida.

Restricted Occupations

Children under the age of 18 are prohibited from working in occupations deemed hazardous. Some of those occupations include working with explosives, operating motor vehicles, logging, operating power-driven meat processing equipment, wrecking, mining or operating band saws.

Exemptions

There are some exemptions in the state of Florida regarding the minimum age requirement for employment. Children may work for their parents in occupations not deemed hazardous or in the entertainment industry registered with Child Labor Compliance. Children at least 10 years of age may also be employed for newspaper delivery.
