California Labor Law Regarding Company Vehicle Travel Time
California labor law does not require an employer to provide a company vehicle for travel. However, travel time must be paid in certain circumstances.
-
Company Vehicle
-
An employer is not obligated under California labor law to provide employees with a company vehicle for travel. If an employee has to meet at a designated area other than the regular workplace and the company requires him to use a company vehicle, the time spent driving is compensable travel time. This applies only if the employer refuses to allow the employee to use his personal vehicle.
Travel Time
-
If an employer is requiring an employee to travel to a workplace that is further than her normal commute, she must be paid for the travel time. If the work site is in the same geographical area as the regular workplace, the employee is exempt from travel time.

Other Modes of Travel
-
Under California labor law, if an employer requires an employee to go out of town, such travel must also be compensated. The time spent on buses, trains, airplanes, ships or any other vessel is treated as travel time and must be compensated. This also includes time spent traveling to and from airports, stations and other depots.
