The Boeing 747 is part of United's extensive fleet of planes.

Subsequent to its 2010 merger with Continental Airlines, United Airlines became the largest airline in the world. Whether another merger will cause the Chicago-based carrier to lose its No. 1 status is anyone's guess.

  1. History

    • United Airlines began as a mail carrier in 1926, but within one year was carrying paying passengers throughout the U.S. The company has often been at the forefront of air travel, being the first in 1930 to introduce air stewardesses and in 1936, creating the first in-flight meals.

    Destinations

    • United operates flights to almost 60 countries worldwide and 370 destinations (as of 2010) . Destinations include major cities in the U.S, Europe, Asia, South America and Australia.

    Planes

    • United makes use of a wide range of passenger and cargo planes. The current fleet includes a range of Boeing planes as well as smaller, short distance jets.

    Corporate

    • As of October 2010 United's managing director is Tyler Reddien. The company is publicly traded with shares available through the New York Stock Exchange.
