Information on Buying Motorcycle Helmets

Information on Buying Motorcycle Helmets thumbnail
An approved motorcycle helmet can save your life.

The number of motorcycles on highways and streets increases every year, and motorcycle operators are advised to wear a helmet that meets or exceeds U.S. Department of Traffic safety standards. Some states require a helmet by law.

  1. Federal Standards

    • A division of DOT called the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has established FMVSS No. 218 which requires minimum performance standards for helmets. The elements measured are impact resistance, penetration resistance and a retention system.

    Labeling

    • DOT requires that all helmets, as of 2008, be permanently labeled with the letters DOT, 3 inches high. Labels must include the manufacturer's name and identification, model, size, month and year of manufacture, and instructions for use.

    Phony labels

    • The letters must be in a contrast color to the color of the helmet. Beware that some unscrupulous dealers may try to falsify DOT labels, claiming that the letters stand for some other words than Department of Transportation. One way to check is to see if decals were properly affixed before the helmet was clear coated.

    Suggestions

    • When buying a motorcycle helmet, check the fit for comfort as well as assurance that the helmet is made of sturdy materials. Riders may choose from full-face or open-face helmets, depending on their preference. Access to feedback from other riders is helpful to a buyer, and a guarantee from the manufacturer provides an additional sense of security.
