The Shape of a Spade Vs. The Shape of a Shovel

The Shape of a Spade Vs. The Shape of a Shovel thumbnail
Choose the right tool for the job.

Differentiating between a spade and a shovel may seem like splitting hairs. Despite the occasional use of the word "shovel" to refer to both instruments, they are two distinct tools. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Identification

    • Shovels have wide, flat, square shaped blades that attach to their handles. Spades have slimmer, angled, arrowhead shaped blades attached to their handles. Shovels have a rounded edge to keep material on the blade. Spades do not have this feature.

    Function

    • Shovels are ideal for lifting and moving loose materials, like gravel or mulch. Spades are ideal for digging, breaking up plant roots and dividing clumps of grass or flowers.

    Types

    • Both spades and shovels come in long sizes for heavy duty work and smaller sizes for detail-oriented jobs. Spades and shovels are both available with wooden, plastic or metal handles.

    Considerations

    • While it is possible to use a shovel to do the job of a spade, and vice versa, it is ineffective and laborious.
