Comparison of Texas Instruments Graphing Calculators

Comparison of Texas Instruments Graphing Calculators thumbnail
Graphing calculators perform algebraic equations using both numbers and graphs.

Many math and physics students use graphing calculators to perform algebraic equations and plot them on graphs automatically. Different courses may require different calculators based on on the complexity of the material. Texas Instruments produces graphing calculators that perform various functions. As of 2010, Texas Instruments offers four basic models.

  1. TI-73 Explorer

    • Texas Instruments' most basic graphing calculator, the TI-73 Explorer, performs functions most useful in lower level mathematics. This model features basic mathematical abilities and the option to make bar graphs, line graphs and pie charts. Texas Instruments Education recommends the calculator for grade school students in classes such as pre-algebra. The TI-73 supports both metric and U.S. customary measurement systems, supports fractions and can transfer data between calculators.

    TI-83 Plus

    • High school students taking mathematics or science can use at the TI-83 Plus graphing calculator. This calculator features 160KB of ROM and 24KB of RAM so the user can download applications to help with assignments. Applications include area formulas, conic graphing and finance. The College Entrance Examination Board approves the TI-83 Plus calculator for the SAT exam. An updated version of this calculator, the TI-84, features three times the memory.

    TI-89 Titanium

    • The TI-89 Titanium graphing calculator, the most powerful classic-style calculator produced by Texas Instruments, performs functions some higher education students use in physics, chemistry, and statistics. The TI-89 sets itself apart from earlier versions because it allows for 3D graphing and the solving of mathematics problems with variables, not just numbers. It features more than five times the memory and speed of the TI-83 model. This model comes preloaded with more than a dozen applications, including CellSheet, a spreadsheet program that lets you input numbers and text and perform formulas with them.

    TI-Nspire

    • The newest model of Texas Instruments graphing calculators, the TI-Nspire, combines the abilities of the classic graphing calculators with modern computer technology. Unlike other models this line has a rechargeable battery, a touchpad that allows you to perform more complex activities that the buttons can't, and a mouse. The user can divide the screen into four sections, allowing for comparing and contrasting multiple graphs. Students can use this graphing calculator for anything from basic mathematics to advanced physics and calculus. The TI-Nspire allows you to download the software to your computer to use a larger screen and then allows you to save, print and share your work among classmates or teachers. College Board approves the TI-Nspire for all standard college-prep exams. Both Windows and Mac sync with the T-Nspire.
