What Does the Forest Service Do With Dead Pack Animals?
Pack animals, such as horses, are allowed and encouraged on many Forest Service lands. Regrettably, some pack animals do not survive their excursions, but the Forest Service is prepared to deal with them.

According to the U.S. Forest Service, one of the ways the Forest Service accomplishes its mission is to manage natural resources on Forest Service lands. This includes taking action to destroy carcasses of dead pack animals that are brought into the lands by humans. The carcass is destroyed to avoid attracting predators or disturbing wildlife in the area.
Near Land That Can Be Turned

The Forest Service will attempt to bury the pack animal carcass if it is near ground that can be turned. Burying the animal is the preferred method of carcass disposal.

On Hardened Terrain

If the pack animal cannot be buried because of the terrain, the Forest Service will use explosives to destroy the carcass. The Forest Service Rangers are trained to use the explosives in a way to incinerate the carcass without creating a larger problem from a mess.
