Difference Between Hand Tossed & Pan Pizza
Pizza as we know it developed in Naples, Italy between the 16th and 19th centuries. It came to the United States with Italian immigrants and developed into regional styles including hand-tossed and pan pizza. Does this Spark an idea?

Hand-Tossed Pizza

A pizza cook prepares a hand-tossed pizza by kneading the dough until it is tender. After kneading, the cook repeatedly tosses the dough into the air to stretch and aerate it so the finished crust will be tender. After the dough is shaped, it is pressed into the pan before being loaded with sauce, cheese and toppings and baked.
Pan Pizza

Deep dish pizza is otten eaten with a knife and fork. Also called Chicago style pizza and deep dish pizza, pan pizza was invented at Pizzeria Uno in Chicago in the 1940s. The thick crust is built directly in a deep pie pan and partially baked before being loaded up with cheese, meat and other toppings. It is then returned to the oven to finish baking. Pan pizza is usually eaten with a fork.

Pizza developed over the course of thousands of years from flat bread first baked by Neolithic hunter-gatherers. Although it was improved upon by the Etruscans, Greeks and Romans, it was the people of Naples, Italy who gave its final form. It came to the United States with Italian immigrants in the late 19th and 20th century but didn't become truly popular until after World War II when American GIs came home from Italy with a craving for pizza and other Italian foods.
