About Wi-Fi Phone

About Wi-Fi Phone thumbnail
Wi-Fi is quickly becoming standard on most cell phones.

Most new cellphones come Wi-Fi enabled--in 2009, Sprint and Verizon declared that all of their phones would include Wi-Fi access. Wi-Fi phones enable the user to access the Internet anywhere in the provider's network.

  1. Identification

    • A Wi-Fi phone can use a regular cellphone tower to make a call, or use the Internet to send data via "voice over Internet protocol" (VOIP).

    Benefits

    • On a regular phone, if the call signal drops, the calls ends. On a Wi-Fi phone, the phone automatically switches to its Wi-Fi network to keep the call seamlessly active.

    Considerations

    • In 2010, Wi-Fi phones have greater power requirements than do regular phones because Wi-Fi phones need to power an extra antenna.
