How Many Bags Can Be Carried on a Plane?

Most flights allow one small bag and one personal item as carry-on luggage.

Passenger bags that are allowed on planes are called carry-on luggage. While rules for carry-on luggage are similar for most flights, it is recommended to check with your airline for the latest information. It is important to note that luggage rules for domestic flights and international flights are different.

Definition

Carry-on luggage involves all bags that a passenger carries by hand onto the aircraft. Most flights allow one small piece of luggage and one personal item. All carry-on luggage must either be stored in the overhead luggage bin or under the passenger's seat.

Types

Most domestic flights restrict the carry-on bag to a maximum of 40 pounds in weight and 45 linear inches in size. The size is measured by adding the number of inches in the length, width and height. In addition, the one personal item allowed can be any of the following:a backpack, a purse, a briefcase, a computer bag, a camera case or a diaper bag.

Special Note

Special equipment such as strollers, musical instruments or other bulky items are not easy to store and, as such, can be problematic. Check with the airline carrier before flying for any additional charges that may apply for carrying on such special equipment. In addition, remember that any liquids included in the carry-on luggage must be in a three-ounce container or less and be packed in a clear, zip-locked plastic bag.
