Paraffin is a byproduct of the petroleum refining process. Paraffin wax is used for candles as it is odorless, has a convenient melting point, and can be perfumed and colored easily.

Controversy

The health and safety status of paraffin wax candles is a matter of some debate. What is known is that paraffin wax is itself a petrochemical byproduct, that some candles do contain traces of metals and that they give off more soot when burned than some vegetable oil-based candles. Negative health effects from paraffin wax candles, however, remain unproven.

Alternatives

Alternatives to paraffin wax candles are usually made from vegetable-based materials. These include ingredients derived from a variety of plants, such as palm oil, soy oil and bayberry wax. A further alternative is beeswax.
