The floor mat used in men's, women's, and rhythmic Olympic gymnastics competitions must be meet the established requirements of size, materials and appearance. For each Olympic year, the Federation of International Gymnastics establishes the guidelines and publishes them in a brochure called "Apparatus Norms."

  1. Dimensions

    • The Olympic gymnastics floor mat measures 18 by 18 meters. The performance area is 12 by 12 meters, with an allowance of plus or minus 3 cm. The corner to corner diagonal length of the performance area is 1,697 cm, with a leeway of 5 cm.

    Orientation

    • The Olympic gymnastics floor mat performance area must be horizontal, with no slopes or rises, gaps or variation in the surface. The border area that surrounds the performance area can slope downward as much as 25 percent to meet the floor.

    Appearance

    • The Olympic gymnastics floor mat performance area is indicated with a 5 cm "delimination strip" in a color, usually white, that contrasts with the color of the mat. The color of the mat and performance space must be solid and plain, but is generally left up to the manufacturer.
