Will Keith Kellogg, the founder of the Kellogg Company, began his career with a sixth grade education. A job assisting his physician brother in food research paved the way for Kellogg to create a cereal that would forever change the breakfast world. An astute business man, Kellogg packaged, marketed and expanded his products, always keeping nutrition and health at the forefront.
How It Began

As with many discoveries, Kellogg created his cereal by mistake. Attempting to improve the vegetarian foods at the sanitarium where he worked, Kellogg and his brother boiled wheat, hoping to make a digestible bread substitute. The pot was accidentally left to stand too long; Kellogg processed it anyway, resulting in flakes. The flakes were served to patients and quickly became a favorite.

Kellogg's business took off as patients continued to request the cereal after departing the sanitarium. Mailing the cereal to these patients blossomed into a packaged food enterprise. As the business grew, the company developed innovative packaging for its products, expanded its distribution overseas, and continued to offer new food creations. Today the Kellogg Company remains a leading producer of convenience foods from cookies to waffles, and of course, cereal.
