Flag Etiquette and Lighting

Flag Etiquette and Lighting thumbnail
The American flag should always be illuminated at night.

According to Section 174 of the U.S. Flag Code, flags must be "properly illuminated" during nondaylight hours. While there are no specific guidelines to follow, it is important that a flag displayed 24 hours a day is visible after sunset. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Dawn to Dusk

    • According to tradition, the American flag is usually put up in the morning and ceremoniously retired at night, according to HomeofHeroes.com. Flags that are not illuminated should always be taken down at sundown.

    Lighting the Flag

    • The U.S. Flag Code does not specify what type of lighting should be used, except that it should remain lit at all times. The flag should be illuminated by sunlight during the day and an "appropriate light source" during the night, according to USA-Flag-Site.org.

    Appropriate Lighting

    • The American Legion interprets the U.S. Flag Code to mean a light that is specifically aimed at the flag, according to FlagGuys.com. However, as a second choice, the American Legion also approves a nearby light source that illuminates the flag enough so a casual observer can identify it.
