The Gala apple is one of the earliest apples to ripen each year. Galas may be harvested in early August in many locations. It has a mild, sweet taste and is excellent for use in baking. The Gala apple tree grows well in some parts of Florida. It does not do well in others, however, because of the warmer temperatures throughout the year. Does this Spark an idea?

Hardiness zones are used to designate geographic areas by their coldest temperature. In Florida the hardiness zones are 8, 9, 10 and 11. Temperatures in Zone 8 may fall as low as 15 to 20 degrees Fahrenheit, while the temperature in zone 11 stays above 40 degrees year round.

Most varieties of apple trees need a cool period. This enhances the coloration of red apples. Many varieties must spend 1,200 to 1,500 hours each year at temperatures below 45 degrees. Even "low-chill" varieties may require up to 300 hours at temperatures below 45 degrees. Gala is not a low-chill apple and is not be suited to zone 11. Its performance in zones 9 and 10 might vary.
