Use of High Loft Batting
-
High loft is the thickest and weightiest batting. Due to its bulk, quilting machines find sewing high loft batting difficult. Because of this, most high loft batting is used in hand-tied quilts, though quilters still find the task arduous. High loft also gives a more rigid structure to the quilt, affecting the way it drapes. Another use for high loft batting is stuffing for pillows, stuffed animals and other crafts.
Loft Battings
-
Batting comes in low, medium, high, extra high and super high loft. Lower loft batting is popular for light-weight quilts, mostly made of unbleached or bleached cotton and easier to quilt. Higher loft is preferred for fluffier quilts needing maximum warmth and is commonly made of polyester. High loft is best for quilts utilizing minimal stitches.

Read the directions of care on batting packaging. Some require pre-washing and will shrink up to 5 percent. Polyester batting is best for people with allergies.
