Arnica flowers resemble these daisies.

Arnica extract is a commonly used homeopathic remedy, drawn from the flowers of the Arnica montana plant. The plant grows wild across much of Europe and is cultivated in North America for herbal medicinal preparations.

  1. Appearance

    • The Arnica plant, also known as wolfsbane, has a yellow flower that resembles a chrysanthemum or daisy. The extract usually comes in gel form, ranging in color from brown to light amber.

    Uses

    • Homeopathic specialists claim Arnica gel can help with anything from epileptic seizures to cardiovascular disease, and can act as anything from a diuretic -- which increases the flow of urine -- to an expectorant -- which clears phlegm from the lungs and respiratory system.

Most commonly, Arnica is sold and used as a topical analgesic to clean, heal, and relieve pain from minor cuts and abrasions.

    Warnings

    • Overuse of topical Arnica gel can result in blisters and other skin problems. Arnica can be extremely poisonous and should only be taken internally under supervision of a doctor or homeopathic specialist and only in a very diluted form. Improper use of Arnica extract can result in dizziness, vomiting, heart palpitations and muscle weakness.
