Applications, or apps, add features to cell phones.

Applications, or apps, are the programs cell phone users download onto the phone to add features. According to a Pew Internet Research Center survey in September 2010, 35 percent of phone owners have applications on the phone.

  1. Application Types

    • Application types include games that can be played on the phone, programs that make it easier to navigate the Internet, programs involving audio and video, and an ever-growing number of programs for ease-of-use in personal and business settings.

    Application Costs

    • Many applications are free. The cost of an application depends on the phone manufacturer and the producer of the application. The popularity of applications grew significantly with the introduction of Apple's iPhone, with many applications for it costing 99 cents. Others are much more costly, such as iVIP Black for the iPhone at $999.99 as of 2010. It is billed as " 'The Millionaire's App', ... access to privileges across a range of luxury partners including Supercars, Cinemas, Concierge, Restaurants, Bars."

    Downloading Applications

    • Phone manufacturers have made downloading applications easy. Phones with Google's Android operating system have an application "market" icon that can list all applications the phone supports. Apple's iPhone App Store offers more than 250,000 applications as of October 2010. Many cell phone providers also offer applications on their website.
