Chevy Chevelle Muscle Car Facts

History
-
The Chevelle SS was launched in 1964, competing with the Pontiac GTO. The most powerful SS came in 1970 as General Motors lifted the ban on engines larger than 400 cubic inches in mid-size cars. However, performance dropped in 1971 as General Motors declared that all cars must run on unleaded fuel and meet more stringent emissions standards. In 1973, SS production ended.
Body and Design Facts
-
The 1965 Chevelle SS had 56 percent of its weight over the front wheels. This caused inferior braking and handling. But the '65 also had power-assisted steering and anti-roll bars. In 1966, stiffer springs and shocks were used that attempted to fix handling problems. Simulated body scoops and a new roof line with a recessed rear window were new design features that year. In 1967 came new 14-inch wheels. Another re-design in 1968 featured a more stretched out hood, a swept-back look for the entire body and a fastback-type rear window. In 1971, a v-shaped front end was introduced.

Engine and Performance Facts
-
The first SS, from 1964, had a 327 cubic inch V8 engine that, at 300 horsepower, lagged behind its competitor, the GTO. The following year, the horsepower rose by 50. However, the Z-16 limited edition had a 396 cubic inch engine with 375 horsepower that could go 0-60 mph in 6 seconds. Only 201 of these were made. This engine became standard on all SS cars in 1966. In 1969 came a number of special order models known as COPO Chevelles. The engines in these were 427 cubic inches, had 425 horsepower and could go 0-60 mph in 5.1 seconds. It is estimated that 323 COPOS were made. In 1970, the SS had the highest factory horsepower rating yet, entry level at 360 and the top at 450. From 1971 to 1973, the SS had a significant drop in horsepower, from 245 down to 130.
