Amarula cream liqueur is made from the fruit of the marula tree, which grows only in South Africa. According to the Amarula website, the cream liqueur is now available "in more than 100 countries around the globe."
A clear version called Amarula liqueur was originally produced in South Africa in 1983. In 1989, Amarula cream liqueur, a cream-based version, was released, also in South Africa. Due to its popularity, only Amarula cream liqueur still remains.
Amarula Cream Liqueur Cocktails
There are a number of cocktail recipes that include Amarula cream liqueur. These include the Springbok, which adds creme de menthe and cream, the Friendship Drink, which adds creme de menthe, and the African Breeze, which adds orange liqueur. Amarula cream liqueur is sweet and so it is used in sweet drinks.
