Luggage Limits for Delta Air Lines

Luggage on Delta flights must meet certain standards.

Delta Air Lines places limits on how luggage can or cannot be brought on a plane. As of 2010, carry-on luggage was free of charge and coach customers were charged a fee for checked bags on most flights.

Carry-On Luggage

Delta allows each passenger to bring one carry-on and one personal item on board. One bag must be stowed in the space underneath the seat and the other larger item in the overhead compartment. The overhead bag should not exceed a size of 22 inches long, 14 inches wide and 9 inches deep or 45 linear inches in combined dimensions. As of 2010, these pieces were free of charge as long as they met Delta and Transportation Security Administration (TSA) requirements.

Checked Luggage

A fee is charged for each item checked on most Delta flights. Some flights, however, have different or no fees depending on the starting point and destination. Bags that are checked in must weigh less than 50 pounds and have a combined length and width of less than 60 inches. Any piece of luggage exceeding either of these limits is subject to an oversize fee. These fees increase as the number of bags per customer increase. Business and first class passengers are not charged for checked luggage.

Packed Items Limits

Certain packed items may be considered hazardous and are not allowed on Delta flights. This list includes explosives, flammable liquid, weapons, large batteries and large quantities of alcohol, dry ice and household items. Prior approval may be needed for certain personal items that are to be packed. A more detailed list is available by contacting Delta or TSA.
