Squirrels seem pretty cute from afar, but when they get into your garden and make a mess -- not so cute. Dog owners have several options available to repel squirrels without causing harm to pets. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Nontoxic Commercial Repellents

    • Fox urine is a non-chemical ingredient used in some commercial repellents. It may repel the squirrels, but you may also find it objectionable. There are also ultrasonic deterrents available that claim to emit high frequency sounds or vibrations that repel squirrels and other rodents.

    Organic Repellent

    • Napthalene is a common ingredient in commercial squirrel repellents, but it is harmful to dogs. Cayenne pepper is a natural alternative. Sprinkling it around your garden and the base of the trees, or adding it to water and painting it around the garden may deter squirrels, and your dog as well. Ingesting pepper may cause stomach upset in dogs but does not pose a serious health hazard compared to napthalene.

    Physical Barriers

    • Another way to keep squirrels out of the garden is by blocking their physical access. Place chicken wire around small plants and metal fencing around trees. PVC pipes wrapped around ropes and poles prevents squirrels from climbing.
