Big Tropical Plants

Palm trees are tropical plants.

Tropical plants have adapted to grow in regions that are both very hot and humid. Most tropical plants are known for their large foliage. Many species of tropical plants also can grow to be quite big.

Size

The best known tropical plants are also some of the biggest. While there are many different species of the palm tree, Colombia's wax palm can grow up to heights of 230 feet, according to PlantaPalm.

Function

Some of the tallest tropical plants are cultivated for growing fruit. The largest varieties of banana plants can reach up to 12 feet, according to the University of Florida.

Fun Fact

One of the rarest tropical plants is the titan arum, native to the rocky hills of Sumatra in Indonesia. The titan arum's flower can grow up to 10 feet itself. It is also known for its horrible smell which it uses to attract bees to feed on its pollen.
