Arizona Smog Testing

Many U.S. states conduct smog testing on consumer vehicles to ensure they conform to legislated exhaust emissions standards. In Arizona, most elements of the smog law regarding tests are the same as other states', with a few minor adjustments -- particularly regarding which vehicles are exempt from testing.

  1. Examination

    • During an Arizona smog check, inspectors will test the emissions of a car to ensure it is not emitting too many harmful pollutants into the atmosphere. They will also check the fuel tank, air injection systems, oxygen sensor and exhaust gas recirculation systems to ensure all are working properly.

    Pollutants

    • When tests are performed, they gauge the degree of carbon released into the air. Automotive exhaust gases release carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide -- both of which are harmful to human and environmental wellness.

    Exempt

    • Vehicles less than five years old and those manufactured prior to 1967 are exempt from routine smog inspections. Electric vehicles and those licensed in other states are not obligated to have smog checks. Leased vehicles that are used to commute to specified areas are excused from this process.

    Registration

    • When registering a vehicle, it must be inspected within 90 days prior to the date of registration. A vehicle may not be tested more than 90 days before registration.
