Indian Dancing History

Dance in India is considered an ancient art.

The dance traditions of India are as varied and diverse as the country itself. Dance has been part of the social and religious culture of the Indian subcontinent for centuries, and dance forms in India have specific purposes and functions.

History

Archaeologists have found evidence of Indian dance traditions dating back thousands of years. Statues of dancers appear on Hindu temples, linking the ancient art of dance to the practice of the Hindu religion.

Types

India is home to classical dance forms for performance or ritual, as well as folk dances performed at social engagements as recreation. Theatrical dances act out Hindu dramas, along with acting and storytelling. Classical dancers undergo years of training, while folk forms are danced for fun by those of all ages at social events, such as weddings or parties.

Potential

The 20th and 21st century dance forms in India display continued dedication to preserving classical dance forms as well as adapting ancient moves to new choreography. Current dance styles include Bollywood dance, which is a fusion form of Indian and Western dance styles, featured in Indian films and music videos. Classical and folk dance groups tour the world in order to share the dancing traditions of India.
