Pergolas and Patios

Pergolas are open-roofed structures meant to support climing plants.

Pergolas and patios are being used in combination to turn back yards into extended living areas. Patios offer stable, decorative ground cover and pergolas add an idea of coverage without taking away nature.

Pergolas

Pergolas are constructed with posts or columns that support an open or latticed roof. They are designed to support climbing vines and roses but are sometimes used solely for yard decor. They can be built with wood, vinyl or fiberglass; pergola kits are available for purchase.

Patios

Patios are extensions of homes intended for relaxation or entertaining. Patio designs are numerous and can be created with concrete, natural stone or paving stones.

Considerations

Accessories for pergolas include lighting, canopies, and roll-up shades. Annual climbers such as the cypress vine and moonflower add natural shade and color to pergolas. Pergolas can also be used as garden pathways.
