The average annual salary for all clergy in the United States, according to the BLS was $46,960 as of May 2009. Because of the nature of deacons' work, a deacon may be able to earn that much money annually, if not more.

According to the Diocese of Austin in Texas, deacons are paid for their services as long as they do not have a civil or private occupation. If a deacon has an occupation, they are not given a salary for their services as deacons. The Diocese in Austin reports that deacons in their diocese are paid $600 a month and compensated for travel to their church if the deacon works full-time.

You are wrong Chris, those who belong to certain orders do take that vow of poverty, chastity, and obedience, as well as their Deacons.

Neither Catholic priests nor Catholic permanent deacons take a vow of poverty. You have them confused with religious brothers and sisters, who generally take vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience.
